A little history...

In 1826 the city of Denain knew a beautiful time thanks to the canal, l’Escaut. The small village then became an important industrial city of the north. 1,000 people worked in coal mines. Five wells were opened, a thousand houses were built. In 1868, the city had fifteen pits, three blast furnaces, two hundred ovens, six breweries, three sugar mills and two refineries

Emile Zola was inspired by the lives of the miners in D
enain for Germinal, one of his greatest novels.
In 1884, Emile Zola came to Denain to get documented about the harsh mining industry time. He t
ried to understand it better to write his book Germinal. In 1828, Denain had 900 inhabitants. The population reached the figure of 25,000 in 1901 to a peak of 30,000 in 1959. The mining episode in Denain ended in 1948 with the closure of the Renard pit.

Local celebrities

Famous characters of Denain are Jules Mousseron, Zeph’ Cafougnette, and Marshal Villars.

Jules Mousseron was born in 1848. He was a minor and a poet who took classes every evening to become a poet. He died in Denain, his hometown in 1943. His name was given to Jules Mousseron high school and to a reception room in town.

Zeph’ Cafougnette is a character created by Jules Mousseron. Like Jules Mousseron, he was a courageous and a faithful minor who is more famous than his creator now.

Marshal Villars (1653 – 1734) was a soldier who became a marshal under the reign of Louis XIV. In 1712 he won the decisive Battle of Denain against the Austrian and Dutch troops during the War of the Spanish Succession. A statue was dedicated to him just outside the city hall.

Sustainable Development week

From 1st to 7th April the Sustainable Development week is held in France. Below you can read the French pupils' ideas of sustainable development. Don't hesitate to comment on this post with your own ideas.

Sustainable Development is :

_ ecological

_ livable

_ sustainable

_ social

_ fair

_ economic

Sustainable Development allows to keep the resources for the future generations.

Sustainable Development prevents us from exhausting the resources.

It deals with problems such as climate change, the scarcity of natural resources.

by Alicia

This week is dedicated to sustainable development. In the canteen, there is organic food to prompt pupils to pay attention to the food that we buy and we eat.

Thanks to this organization many pupils may change their eating habits and also to protect the planet.

by Aline

For me sustainable development has to be a conduct which is used first of all to protect as much as possible the nature and its environment. Because more and more we see industries, companies which produce waste and it harms the well-being of the environment and its functioning.

by Abdelkader

Sustainable development is a project founded in order to protect the planet, the environment and to avoid climate change reducing global warming and the greenhouse effects. It consists in using low-electricity light-bulbs, wind turbines, ride a bike instead of drive your car or use the tube, save water, electricity, energy in general. Next week is dedicated to that, from April, 1st to April, 7th. There will be stands, exhibitions, posters, people who explain, talk about sustainable development.

by Darlène

With the sustainable development week there’s an opportunity for our school to organize exhibitions and meetings. It’s very important. We are prepared as well as we can. Some classes have made posters to make teenagers aware of the issue. Established in 1987, sustainable development consists in meeting the present generation's needs without compromising the future generation. It acts in technical and social organizations to have a safe environment.

Because of pollution, climate change, or endangered biodiversity, we reduce and limit the consumption of every human.

by Soulaïma

The week of sustainable development will take place from 1st to 7th April, it has for theme « Let’s change our habits. » in order to prompt the population to change their daily consumption.

On the week of sustainable development there are exhibitions and conferences.
